Triple Scale Saccharometer Hydrometer Made in U.S.A.
A saccharometer is a hydrometer used for determining the amount of sugar in wort (beer) or must (wine) . A reading taken before fermentation begins will show potential alcohol and verify whether there is enough or not enough sugar in solution to reach the correct amount of alcohol. The sugar level is determined by reading the value where the surface of the beer or wine crosses the scale. It works on the principle of buoyancy. A solution with a higher sugar content is denser, causing the hydrometer to float higher. Less sugar results in a lower density and a lower floating hydrometer.

Plastic Hydrometer Jar
Never stick a hydrometer into a whole batch of beer or wine. If it breaks, (it is quite fragile glass), you have lost a whole batch of beer or wine. Instead, remove a sample of the wort or must with a sanitized wine thief or turkey baster and empty sample into a sanitized hydrometer jar making sure there is enough liquid for the hydrometer to float. Take your reading. You can return sample to fermenter or throw it away if you are concerned about contamination.
